I have a passion for working with brands to create light, bright, and elegant content that remains simple and approachable for the everyday busy baker.
Bonjour! I'm Danielle.
Loaded with cinnamon swirls, eggnog, and topped with a very generous amount of crumble, this coffee cake is perfect for your holiday breakfast or dessert table! Grab a cup of coffee and indulge!
I was asked by Carusele to participate in the #bakingathome #cookwithcrisco campaign sponsored by B&G Foods, Inc. Although I have been compensated, all opinions are my own.
Process Overview
This recipe is based on a traditional English scone recipe passed down by my great grandma. The resulting scones are light, fluffy, and not-too-sweet. They’re best enjoyed with a cup of coffee or tea!
It starts with sifting together dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt).
Then, use a pastry cutter to cut in cubed Crisco® Butter Flavor All-Vegetable Shortening and sugar. Add cinnamon chips and stir to combine.
Make a hollow in the dry mixture and then add beaten egg and buttermilk. The mixture will be very sticky, but don’t panic. You’ll use generous amounts of flour on a surface and on your hands to make the dough more workable.
Fold the dough a couple times to help create layers that will puff up and rise while baking. Slice the dough into triangles and place them on a parchment lined baking sheet or use a scone pan if you have one! I love how uniform they turn out with a scone pan, but it’s totally not required.
When the scones are cooling, prepare a simple maple glaze using Maple Grove Farms® Pure Maple Syrup for the ultimate flavor combo! Mix together powdered sugar, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and some milk. Drizzle the glaze over the scones for the perfect touch of sweetness.

Why use shortening?
If you grew up cooking and baking, you grew up with Crisco in your house! For over 100 years, Crisco has been an essential part of the kitchen and helps improve the quality of your meals. My family has been using Crisco for generations.
Shortening is plant-based and can be easily added to baking mixtures as well as cooking applications where it melts into an oil for pan frying! My recipe for scones calls for Crisco® Butter Flavor All-Vegetable Shortening because of the way it makes them fluffy. You can create lots of desserts with Crisco® Baking Stick All-Vegetable Shortening. It contains 50% less saturated fat than butter and makes pie crusts flaky, your cakes and cookies soft, and your frostings fluffy!
Maple Glaze
Since these scones aren’t overly sweet on their own, I’m topping my Cinnamon Chip Scones with a Maple Glaze made with Maple Grove Farms® Pure Maple Syrup. What began on one family farm is 1915 is now one of America’s largest packers of 100% pure maple syrup! I love the genuine flavor of the pure maple syrup and it pairs perfectly with the cinnamon in the recipe.
